Since 1905 the Leipzig New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) is the seat of the Leipzig city administration. The New Town Hall was built in the style of historicism. The main tower is with 114.8 meters the tallest city hall tower in Germany.
The New Town Hall is situated on the site where the Pleissenburg Castle stood. The Pleissenburg Castle was built in the 13th century and named after the river Pleisse which runs nearby.
At Pleissenburg Castle the Leipzig Debate (German: Leipziger Disputation) took place in 1519.  It was a disputation between the reformer Martin Luther and Johann Eck, a defender of Catholic doctrine. The debate led the Pope to censor Luther and threaten him with excommunication from the Catholic Church. In 1539 Martin Luther was back in Leipzig and preached the implementation of reformation.
